imes - Institute of Mechatronic Systems

The Institute of Mechatronic Systems (imes) is part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Leibniz Universität Hannover dealing with the development, modelling, identification and control of different kinds of mechatronic systems. The institute works on both fundamental research and application-oriented projects characterized by a high degree of interdisciplinarity. The institute’s main research topics include

  • medical systems,
  • robotics (industrial, parallel as well as mobile autonomous service robots),
  • production engineering,
  • automotive mechatronics.

As member of the Hannover Center of Mechatronics, the imes actively participates within the scope of various cooperation projects in all MZH research topics.

The institute's research associates are supported by our experienced technical staff and can rely on well-equipped mechanical and electrical workshops. In order to carry out the research projects, numerous laboratories with modern equipment are available. Last but not least, the institute shows strong commitment to student education and gives lectures on mechanics, robotics, and mechatronics, including mechatronic applications in the automotive and medical sector.

Within the scope of collaborative projects in the aforementioned research topics, the imes is able to contribute the following research skills:

Methodic Competences

  • Analysis and optimisation of mechatronic systems (including design, modelling, parameter identification and feedback control)
  • Measuring and control technology
  • Controls and drives
  • Actuators and sensors
  • Signal and image processing
  • Multi-criteria and multi-dimensional optimisation (deterministic and heuristic methods)
  • Real-time programming, use of micro controllers and bus systems
  • Design and implementation of prototypes and test beds

Modelling of Mechatronic Systems

  • Electric, hydraulic, pneumatic and electromagnetic actuators
  • Nonlinear, hysteresis-afflicted friction effects, tire/road surface contact, backlash
  • Multi-body systems
  • Data-based models

Development of Observer and Compensation Structures

  • Enhanced Kalman filter, sliding mode, H8 observer, particle filter
  • Estimation as well as compensation of nonlinearities (e.g. backlash, friction)

Parameter Identification in Mechatronic Components

  • Robust offline and online identification
  • Nonlinear optimisation algorithms, evolutionary algorithms, particle swarm

Controller Synthesis

  • Model-based linear and nonlinear controller design
  • State control, robust controllers, passivity-based controllers
