IDS - Institute of Dynamics and Vibration Research

The Institute of Dynamics and Vibration Research (IDS) of the Leibniz Universität Hannover is part of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. The institute’s research projects are being worked on in 4 groups:

  • dynamics of rotating machinery,
  • contact mechanics and friction,
  • adaptronic systems and
  • piezoelectric and ultrasonic technology.

Our research focus is on modelling, simulation and optimisation of friction contacts, as well as on the analysis of vibration caused by friction. Furthermore, we concentrate on the analysis of dynamics of structures containing piezoelectric power converters with implementation in ultrasound technology, active vibration damping and medical engineering. Being part of the Hannover Centre for Mechatronics, the IDS also performs research on magnetic guidance, novel drive and bearing technologies as well as on medical engineering problems.

The work at IDS focuses on fundamental research projects as well as on application-oriented problems. Here the close interaction between theoretic research work and its experimental validation on the institute’s test benches characterises the work at IDS, supported by state-of-the-art experimental equipment as well as by test benches developed by the institute itself.

Technical Equipment (Extract)

The Institute of Dynamics and Vibration Research disposes of 9 laboratories and additional test areas. The laboratories are equipped with traditional measuring instruments for vibration and friction analysis as well as with complex room-sized test rigs.
