GEM – Institute of the Basics of Electrical Engineering and Measurement Science

The Institute of the Basics of Electrical Engineering and Measurement Science is divided into two research groups:

the Sensors and Measurement Technology (SMT) group under the direction of
Prof. Dr.-Ing. S. Zimmermann,

the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) group under the direction of
Prof. Dr.-Ing. H. Garbe.

  • Medical technology (breathing gas analysis in particular)

  • Gas detection (ppb)

Electromagnetic Compatibility group - Prof. Dr.-Ing. H. Garbe

  • TEM cells as test equipment for immunity and emission measurements
  • Propagation of disturbances in telecommunication lines
  • Test methods of 1 GHz and higher
  • Development of electromagnetic field sensors
  • Numerical calculation of electromagnetic fields

Technical Equipment (Extract)

  • Comprehensive basic equipment for measuring electrical and non-electrical values
  • Shielded and air-conditioned test rooms
  • Chemical laboratory with high-purity gas supply including gas dosing system (lower ppb range) in the Laboratory of Nano and Quantum Engineering
  • Mass spectrometers (micrOTOF II)
  • PC cluster with extensive simulation software
  • Field test equipment up to 8 GHz (TEM and GTEM cells)
  • Time and frequency range measurement technology up to 20 GHz
  • Acoustics laboratory, mechanics and electronics workshop
